On February 15, 2021, the United States Senate voted not to impeach former president Donald Trump, despite overwhelming evidence that Trump had encouraged mobs of his supporters to invade both houses of Congress, where they damaged and stole property; threatened elected officials, congressional aides and Capitol workers; injured and killed congressional guards and threatened the life of former Vice President Mike Pence. Witnesses report that when Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy phoned Trump in a desperate appeal to have Trump publicly tell the rioters to stop and leave Capitol buildings, reporting that Pence was at that moment being escorted by officers who feared for his and their lives, Trump replied, “Apparently, they [the mob] care more about the election than you do.” Decent American citizens hope to see re-establishment of a republic where laws cannot readily be ignored or overturned by rampaging, life-threatening mobs who have been encouraged by politicians.
