“THE WIZARD OF SACRAMENTO by William Smithers is a brief but powerful tome bringing to light murky events and legislation of four term Governor Jerry Brown and a pithy political post-mortem and an alternative history to what mainstream publications may have glossed over in assessing the Governor’s recently concluded reign. A must read for political junkies. …
“This book can be read and enjoyed alongside the pioneering work of investigative journalists like Wayne Barrett, Mike Royko, David Cay Johnston and others.”

students and the curious alike.”

” … This compelling analysis feels particularly important in light of current political pressures to weigh economic impacts next to the health and safety of American citizens. Brown’s decisions to place the economic interests of his struggling state in the wake of the financial crisis ahead of protective environmental regulations is worthy of historical analysis and critique. Smithers is up to the task with this well-documented profile …”

“I found this book to be extremely insightful. … Smithers offers considerable evidence to show that Brown’s promises were very different from his actions. … The author does an excellent job of clearly presenting this material in a thoughtful yet concise manner. …”

“This work is an individual attempt to bring to public knowledge an objective account of Edmund Gerald “Jerry” Brown’s policies, political appointments, and conduct during his time as California governor. The author references various sources and reports, like the one done by Consumer Watchdog, to support his claims, leaving the readers to sift out what actually obtained behind the scenes from Brown’s claims of being “a decisive, effective leader [and] a progressive, enlightened environmentalist” (chapter ten, page 5 of 7).
“I guess William Smithers carefully chose the title “The Wizard of Sacramento: Governor Jerry Brown” to show how deep and far-reaching an organized distortion of facts can be, even in the face of some resistance from a few noble citizens. I was shocked to read that Brown, despite his religious and moral upbringing, could continuously place his selfish interests over the collective safety and prosperity of the people who entrusted him with their votes. I think that Brown’s decision to invest his time and resources in propaganda to earn a cheap good name and reputation instead of addressing the people’s concerns leaves much to be questioned.
“Smithers has done a thorough job highlighting many of Brown’s selfish, anti-people policies and conduct, including the lapses of his government’s waste and toxic substances regulatory bodies, his violation of federal and state laws on human and environmental safety, his cold responses to the plights of the residents of Kern County and Porter Ranch, and his give-and-take transactions with oil and gas conglomerates, most of which brought the people he governs so much pain, deprivation, and sickness. The author also noted how so many public officials, institutions, and organizations failed to hold Brown and his government accountable.
“There are just a few errors in the book, showing that a diligent effort was put into the editing. I have no complaints to report about this book, and I am rating it 5 out of 5 stars because the author provided enough evidence to support the claims made in this book. It’s great that the author presented his points in the most respectful, objective manner, never attempting to persuade the readers but leaving things open for them to choose their truths. I see this publication as a patriotic, brave project.
“I recommend “The Wizard of Sacramento: Governor Jerry Brown,” written by William Smithers, to anyone interested in knowing ‘the other side of the story’ as regards Brown’s policies and conduct during his governorship terms in California.”
